About Casita del Maguey
The newly completed and fully furnished Casita del Maguey is a stunning addition to the inventory of San Miguel House Rentals. This one-bedroom contemporary Mexican charmer is located in the northwest section of Centro, very close to the main Mercado, and a level walk of just 4.5 blocks from the Jardin, within easy "on foot" reach of restaurants, shops, organic vendors and artisan markets.
Designed by noted San Francisco architects Cathi and Steven House, Casita del Maguey (and its "sister" Casita del Mesquite) is an integral part of CASA, the Center for Architecture, Sustainability + Art, a new learning and retreat center. Gallery and studio spaces at the front of the property give way to this beautiful pair of separate casitas, each with its own private entrance and self-contained amenities. The whole property is a wonderful mix of terraces, courtyards, fountains and gardens, which link gallery, studios and casitas. Casita del Maguey features its own beautiful maguey cactus garden from which it draws its name.
Windows, skylights, stone walls, steps and plantings -- all are carefully choreographed to create spaces that move in constantly changing vistas and glow with natural light. The casitas invite pause and induce wonder with their simple palette of white lime-washed walls, floors of golden travertine marble and a red accent wall. Tying the spaces together is a grape-colored "recinto" stone wall along the south side of the property. The architects gave careful consideration to the movement of the sun throughout the seasons in the creative use of windows and skylights that send danciny patterns of light and shadow into every corner.
Casita del Maguey has a spacious living/dining/kitchen area and a powder room on the first floor. This inviting space with its iconic aluminum "artichoke" chandelier, features 20-foot ceilings and expanses of glass overlooking a private cactus garden. A winding steel staircase leads up to the master bedroom suite with queen bed, ceiling fan, closet and the master bathroom wrapped in frosted glass. Casita del Maguey's floating sculptural stairway leads from the second floor terrace to a private upper-level roof deck offering dramatic vistas over the San Miguel skyline.
The kitchen and bath have granite counters, striking black cabinetry, modern appliances and furniture, sleek dual-flush toilets and all the cookware you need - microwave, toaster, blender, coffeemaker, plus ironing board and iron. A laundry with washer/dryer is on the premises, shared by both casitas, where you can do your personal laundry. The housekeeper, Maribel, comes to service both casitas on Mon, Wed and Fri from 9 am to 3 pm. She changes sheets once a week and towels twice a week.
The casita's special features include in-floor radiant heating, a whole-house water purification system (so it's safe to drink out of the tap), free Wi/Fi Internet connection, an I-Pod music docking station, a flatscreen TV with cable service for more than 100 channels (including primary U.S. channels), an intercom to open the front gate electronically and access to a solar-heated lap pool that's shared by both casitas. Casita del Maguey also has a Vonage line for calling to the U.S. and Canada.
A perfect retreat for couples, conveniently located near the main Mercado (where you can buy fresh produce and flowers), and an easy walk to all the sights of Centro -- Casita del Maguey is waiting for your next visit to San Miguel!
