A great day in the country for families visiting San Miguel:
First, a visit to Rancho del Sol Dorado for horseback riding on well-groomed trails through high-desert chaparral countryside (and a quick lesson beforehand in the ring with riding master Roberto, if you’re a novice rider). The friendly, helpful owners are Holly and Mario Ortiz; they also welcome you to tour their beautiful stables and grounds and meet their resident burros, dogs and minature pony. Then, on to La Burger, a roadside cafe on the highway to Dolores Hidalgo (about 10 min from the rancho), open only Wed – Sun, but well worth the special trip for its simply perfect menu of grilled burgers and steaks, served with organic greens and/or homemade parsley fries.
Arrangements can be made through San Miguel House Rentals for a taxi or van service to take you out to the rancho, about 20 min north of San Miguel. The driver can return two hours later to take you on to the restaurant (he then can wait, if you wish, while you dine) and/or back into San Miguel.
Or, if you prefer a more rugged ride, the Coyote Canyon Adventures company can take you to another rancho for a four-hour tour into a river canyon with steep arroyo trails. San Miguel House Rentals can assist with setting up this tour also.
And, for smaller groups who also want a special gourmet Mexican lunch served on the covered terrace of a beautiful 200-year-old stone ranch house following their 2-hour ride around the reservoir and through farmlands, we recommend the trail riding/comida package at Rancho De La Capilla. Call San Miguel House Rentals for more information.
